Meredith Voice Over (MVO): It’s all about lines. The finish line at the end of residency. 

MVO: Waiting in line for a chance at the operating table. 

(Cut to George pulling up in a car at SGH car park) 

MVO: And then there is the most important line. 

MVO: The line separating you from the people you work with. 

MVO: It doesn’t help to get too familiar. 

MVO: To make friends. Youneed boundaries. Between you and the rest of the world. 

(Cut to Alex checking Izzie out in the locker room as she gets ready for work) 

MVO: Other people are far too messy. 

MVO: It’s all about lines. Drawing lines in the sand. And praying like hell no one crosses them. 

MVO: At some point you have to make a decision. Boundaries don’t keep other people out. They fence you in. Life ismessy. That’s how we’re made. 

MVO: So you can waste your life drawing lines. 

MVO: Or you can live your life crossing them. 

MVO: But there are some lines … 

MVO: … that are way too dangerous to cross. 
 
MVO: Here’s what I know. If you’re willing to take the chance, the view from the other side is spectacular. 

MVO: After a while … 
 
MVO: … the ways of residency … 

MVO: …become the ways of life. 

MVO: Number One …  
MVO: … always keep score. 

MVO: Number two.  Do whatever you can to outsmart the other guy.
 
MVO: Number three. Don’t make friends with the enemy. 
MVO: Oh and yeah number four. 

MVO: Everything.  Everything is a competition.
MVO: Whoever said that winning wasn’t everything …

MVO: … never held a scalpel.

MVO: There’s another wayto survive this competition. A way that no one ever seems to tell you about.

MVO: One you have to learn for yourself. Number five. It’s not about the race at all. There are no winners or losers. Victories are counted by the number of lives saved. 

MVO: And once in a while, if you’re smart, the life you save could be your own.

MVO: Intimacy is a four-syllable word for, "Here are my heartand soul.

MVO: Please grind them into hamburger and enjoy."

MVO: It's both desired and feared,

MVO: difficult to live with...

MVO: ...and impossible to live without.

MVO: Intimacy also comes attached to life's three R's: Relatives, romance and roommates

MVO: There are some things you can't escape. And other things you just don't want to know.

MVO: I wish there were a rulebookfor intimacy. Some kind of a guide that could tell you when you've crossed the line.\

MVO: It would be nice if you could see it coming.

MVO: And I don't know how you fit it on a map.

MVO: You take it where you can get it?

MVO:...and keep it as long as you can.

MVO: And as for rules?

MVO: Maybe there are none.

MVO: Maybe the rules of intimacy are something you have to define foryourself.

Meredith Voiceover (MVO)- Remember when you were a kid and your biggest worry was, like, if you’d get a bike for your birthday, or if you get to eat cookies for breakfast. Being an adult? Totally overrated. 

MVO- I mean, seriously, don’t be fooled by all the hot shoes and the great sex and the no parents anywhere telling you to do. Adulthood is responsibility. MVO- Responsibility, it really does suck. 

MVO- Really, really sucks. 

MVO- Adults have to be places and do things and earn a living and pay the rent. And if you’re training to be a surgeon, holding a human heart in your hands. Hello! Talk about responsibility. 

MVO- Kinda makes bikes and cookies look really really good, doesn’t it? 

MVO- The scariest part about responsibility-when you screw up and let it slip right through your fingers. 

MVO- Responsibility. It really does suck. 

MVO- Unfortunately, once you get past the age of braces and training bras, responsibility doesn’t go away. 

MVO- It can’t be avoided. 

MVO- Either someone makes us face it, or we suffer the consequences. 

MVO- And still, adulthood has its perks. 

MVO- I mean the shoes, the...
