Harrison Bergeron

1. At the end of Vonnegut’s story, how did you feel about Hazel? George? Harrison?
At the end of the story, I feel that Vonnegut based the three main characters off of threedifferent types of people in the world. For example, Hazel is the type of person who goes through life as the average person with the normal ups and downs of life. George is one who has greatabilities and would love to use them to their greatest extent, but is overlooked, in a sense, and is then handicapped so that he is no different from anyone else. As for Harrison, he is the thinker and doer.He devised a plan to take over the government, or try, and no one was going to stop him from that.

2. What details in the story make us infer, or guess, that all does not work very smoothly inthis society where everyone is equal “every which way”? Do you think this is a realistic prediction of what would happen if all competition were done away with? Why, or why not?

It is not fair totreat the ones disabled in that manner of having the ear piece on , which makes them feel unequal. I think this is partially realistic, because they would take some charge on what to do and what notto do because they have the "power" to do so.

When Hazel and George attempt to discuss the difference between the competitive society of yesteryear and the America they live in, George’s respect forthe laws that have crippled him is heartbreaking.

3. What kinds of societies could be the targets of Vonnegut’s satire in this story? What attitudes is he mocking?

The type of socety thatVonnegut was portraying was a distopian society. The story takes place in America and he was getting at the rising socialist societies. He was mocking the ideas of complete equality and also trying toplease everyone.

4. What is the difference between believing that people are equals under the law and believing that everyone is the same?
