Helping teenage students with listening
Hi. In this new age of technology it is possible for the teachers to include lots of audio resources in their classes. I've found it useful to select thosebooks for my classes which there is an audio available for them. This way they always improve their listening even when they are working on other skills. Also, there are lots of free for downloadresources on the net which are extremely useful. Good Luck

Listening is a skill that needs lots of practice. I like to use BBC learnenglish, Wordsin the News. I start by engaging the Ss in the topic, then we listen and Ss write down as many words as they can make out.
They compare their list and we listen again. At this stage you might feelit is getting a little tedious listening to the same thing so many times but the Ss really appreciate the repetition.

After that I find it useful to show the script and they listen for a thirdtime while reading the script. This stage can be repeated for pronunciation and word stress practice as well. For homework, I expect them to write up a personal glossary of new words or phrases. There are thousands of interesting topics on this website and I often develop lessons around one of these texts.

Have fun with this one.

Dear Kim,

There are definitely a lot of useful ways to help teenagers improve their listening power especially in the presence of the Internet. But one rule of which I am a strongadvocate and I have practically experienced it is 'the more your students listen the better they are attuned to even the slightest variations of the spoken language'. My advice is to make them listenwith objectives that are known to you and your students. You may try "http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/listen-and-watch" to start your students off.

Thanks
