After 'divorcing' Catherine of Aragon Henry VIII lived at Hampton Court Palace with his new wife Anne Boleyn. Henry hadmany palaces which he lived in, these included Greenwich (where he was born), Richmond and many others. He had so may palaces, castles and houses that no other monarch before or since has had more. When he died he had around 50 residencies to his name. CHOPPING AND CHANGING

1) Henry VIII was born in 1491. He was quite unlike his father, Henry VII. He was cruel, wasteful with money, and interestedin pleasing himself. Henry was hard, cruel, ambitious and calculating. He loved sports, music and dance. No king was ever more popular with his people. He was worried, because he didn’t have any son to follow him as king. Few survived his anger: he executed two of his wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. He had six wives, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves,Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr. He was Lord of Ireland (later King of Ireland) and claimant to the Kingdom of France. Henry was the second monarch of the House of Tudor, succeeding his father.

He was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Henry VIII used the Parliament to help him make the break with Rome. Between 1529 and 1536 Parliament passed many laws. Some had nothing to do with the break with Rome but the most important new law that it passed was the Act of Supremacy in 1534;this said that Henry was the head of the new Church of England. All church services were now in English and a copy of the Bible too. Most people accepted these new rules but some didn’t. If someone supported the Pope it was an act of treason and the punishment was death.

Catherine of Aragon
3) Henry only made the Break with Rome because the Pope wouldn’t let him have a divorce. In 1509, Henrymarried a Spanish princess called Catherine of Aragon. She had once been the wife of his brother, Arthur, who was now dead. The Bible forbids it, but the Pope gave permission for the marriage to go ahead. Catherine had four pregnancies, but the children died. Henry needed a son to take the throne after he died. Catherine had only one healthy child, a daughter called Mary. He wanted to divorce...
