The city was founded as Eboracum in AD 71. C. by the Romans and became one of the two capitals of Roman Britain. During that period, large figures are associated with this city, as Constantine theGreat. The whole Roman Empire was ruled from York by Septimius Severus for a period of two years.
Later would come the Angles. The city was called Eoferwic and became the capital of the Kingdom ofNorthumbria. The Vikings captured the city in 866, renaming Jórvic (hence the current name). During this period of Norman rule was the capital of the kingdom of the same name, which dominate much ofnorthern England. Around the year 1000 definitely was renamed York.
Richard II wished to make York the capital of England, but was deposed before. After the War of the Roses, York housed the Council ofthe North, and was considered the capital of the north. Only lasted a decade, 1660, by the decline of the city. However, York was the Yorkshire city, which lent its name. The Province of York is oneof the two provinces of the Anglican Church, along with that of Canterbury.
Since 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority which includes rural areas beyond the old city limits. Theurban area has a population of 137,505 inhabitants, while the assembly comprises about 184,900 people. Currently, the old part of the city is a major tourist destination, attracting visitors fromaround the world.

York lies within the Vale of York, a flat area of farmland, bordered by the Pennines mountains (mountains ranging from Dervyshire to Scotland and Northlandseparated into east and west), the North York Moors and the Wolds, at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss at the end of the moraine on the left of the last Age Glaciar.1
