The Party Dress

Every summer there was a big party in town. All trees were decorated with flowers and lit by glow worms. TheRambling Mousekins band played their flutes and there was a dancing until dawn- or until the band fell asleep.
Little Squirrel tried on her special party dress. “It’s no good,” said Mrs.Squirrel. “You’ve outgrown it. I really dan’t have time to make you a new one so you’ll just have to wear your everyday dress.”
Little Squirrel ran out of the house. She went all the way to thestream and sat down and cried miserably.
“Whatever’s the matter with you?” said Mrs. Duck, opening a big wooden chest in the corner.
Little Squirrel was amazed to see all the feathers thatspilled out of it- blue ones, green ones, beautiful brown ones, fluffy ones, long shiny ones- all sorts.
“Which colors do you like best?” asked Mrs. Duck. “You’ll be the only one at the party in afeather dress, I’ll bet.”
Little Squirrel chose blue and green. She helped Mrs. Duck sew the feathers together. It was quite easy once she knew how.
At last the dress was ready. “Tryit on,” said Mrs. Duck. “There’s a mirror,” she laughed, pointing to the stream. “Oh! It’s… beautiful! Thank you so much,” said Little Squirrel, dancing on the bank.
It was the best partyLittle Squirrel could remember. She was chosen as a Woodland Princess and she danced until she fell asleep and her father carried her home.
