QUICK AND EASY NCONF INSTALLATION TUTORIAL:

The goal of this tutorial is to install and configure NConf. NConf is a web based tool for configuring and managing Nagios. Nagios is a great tool for monitoring the health of your network. This tutorial presupposes that you have already used the previous two tutorials to install Linux, Nagios, install MySQL2, have an Internetconnection, and have machines to monitor. The first two tutorials helps with such common tasks as starting and stopping services, accessing the Linux command line as root user, etc.

Downloading and Installing NConf: The first step is to download NConf. Go to http://www.nconf.org.

Click on the “Download” link.

Click on the link to the versionyou want to download and then click on the “Downloads” icon.

Select the type of file you want to download

If you downloaded the tar.gz file, follow the next steps: 1. Depending on where you downloaded the .tar.gz file and the filename, the commandto decompress the archive using the gzip command is: a. b. If successful, there is no error message. 2. Expand the archive into the destination directory using the cd and tar commands as follows: a. b. If successful, you should see the files being expanded.

c. 3. Rename the extracted directory to the easier to type “nconf” name using the mv command. a. b. If successful, there is no errormessage.

If you downloaded the zip file, follow the next steps: 1. Depending on where you downloaded the .zip file and the filename, the command to decompress the archive using the cd and unzip commands are: a. b. If successful, you should see the files being expanded.

c. 2. Rename the extracted directory to the easier to type “nconf” name using the mv command. a. b. If successful, there is no error message.

Configuring the NConf Installation: With the software installed, read through the README section on the download page for the latest in settings that need to be changed to get NConf working. You can also find the README file in the/opt/nconf/ directory where NConf is now installed. The current version as of this writing recommends making the following changes to the default Fedora settings: 1. Update the /etc/php.ini file modifying the following settings as needed. As of Fedora 15, only the first item needed changing.

a. 2. Set permissions for NConf to work with the Apache webserver. The easiest way to do this is to set theuser/owner of the /opt/nconf/ directory and subdirectories to the same user as used by Apache, which is usually the user “apache.” The following shows how to use the cd and chown commands to first get into the NConf directory and then change the ownership of the NConf directory and subdirectories to the apache user. a. b.
