Resumen
El pterigion es una de las enfermedades
oculares más frecuentes y es uno de los
principales motivos de consulta
oftalmológica hoy en día. Se define
como una degeneración corneal no
involutivas que presenta una
proliferación fibrovascular del tejidoconjuntival que crece hacia la córnea.
La característica de esta enfermedad
que nos llamó a hacer este estudio es la
capacidad de recidiva que tiene, que se
traduce como problema constante aún
luego de un primer tratamiento.
OBJETIVO: Determinar la incidencia de
recidiva de pterigion en pacientes
operados en el Instituto Espaillat Cabral
durante el año 2012. MATERIAL Y
METODOS: Se realizó unestudio
analítico, descriptivo, retroprospectivo y
de corte transversal. La población
estudiada fue 49 ojos operados. Se
asoció la recidiva con diferentes
variables (edad, sexo, grado,
localización y tiempo de recidiva). Se
elaboró un formulario con el objetivo de
obtener los datos necesarios para el
estudio. CONCLUSIONES: El grupo
etáreo más frecuentemente afectado de
pterigion fue elde 50-59 años, (27% de
la población). La incidencia de recidiva
de pterigion fue un 14% y el periodo
transcurrido entre la cirugía correctiva
anterior y la recidiva variaba mucho
entre la muestra estudiada (1-6 años).
La localización más frecuente tanto del
pterigion primario como recidivante fue
la nasal (88%), y los grados de
severidad de pterigion más frecuente
fueron el de segundo ytercer grado
(37% y 51% respectivamente).

Abstract:
The pterygium is one of the most
frequent ocular pathologies and it is one
of the principle motives of
consultation on present day. It is
defined as a non-involutive corneal
degeneration that presents a fibro
vascular proliferation of conjunctival
tissue that grows towards the cornea.
The characteristic of this disease that
inclinedus to do this research is its high
potential of recurrence, that tends to
presents itself as a problem even after a
primary treatment. OBJECTIVE:
Determine the incidence of recurrent
pterygium in patients that have been
intervened in the Instituto Espaillat
Cabral in the year 2012. MATERIAL
AND METHOD: An analytical,
descriptive, retrospective and
transversal cut study. The fieldconsisted in 49 eyes previously
intervened. We studied the association
with age, sex, grade, localization and
time of recurrence. A form was created
with the objective of obtaining the
necessary data to study the variables of
the investigation. CONCLUSIONS: The
most frequent age that was affected by
pterygium ranked between 50-59 years
old, (27% of the population). The
incidence of recurrenceof pterygium
was a 14% and the period of time
between the corrective surgery and the
recurrence of the pterygium was very
variable in studied eyes (1-6 years).
Regarding localization, the most
frequent primary and recurrent
pterygium were nasal (88%), and
severity grade most commonly were
second and third grade (37% and 51%
respectively).

Introducción
El pterigion es una de las enfermedades oculares mas frecuentes y es uno de los
principales motivos de consulta oftalmológica hoy en día. La palabra pterigion viene del
griego (pterygos, “Pequeña ala”) y se define como una degeneración corneal no
involutivas quepresenta una proliferación fibrovascular del tejido conjuntival que crece
desde la conjuntiva bulbar hacia la córnea, de consistencia carnosa y generalmente en
forma de ala. Está clasificado dentro de las degeneraciones no involutivas o
tumoraciones epiteliales benignas corneales.
