Introduction

The American Revolution lasted eight years from 1775 until 1783. The war was between the Kingdom of Great Britain and their Thirteen British Colonies in North America. There were several problems that ledtowards the American war for independence. The American people felt violated by a far away kingdom that they did not see as their own. They were being excessively taxed on basic goods and could not afford or tolerate it.
In order to fight a successful war, a number of great men stood up against unfairness and they played a decisive role in winning the American Independence from Great Britain. The Original Thirteen Colonies became The United States of America, one of the most powerful nations today.

Thirteen Original Colonies

The Thirteen Original Colonies are often divided into threeregions: the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.
The New England Colonies were composed by Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Three years later more pilgrims cameto New Hampshire and began to settle there.
Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636. It was founded so that he could practice his Puritan religion. For that same reason, many colonists came to live in Connecticut. People in the colony included colonist and Native Americans. The economy included trade and growing crops.
Captain John Smith founded Massachusetts for religious freedom. There was a population of more than 200,000 people. The people there were mostly puritans, Indians, and farmers. There were no trained doctors and the work was strictly divided between men and women. Their jobs were mostly farming and trade. The farmers grew many vegetables such as beans, pumpkins, peas, and corn.
The Middle Colonies were also known as the Bread Colonies because of their productionof wheat, grain, and oats. These colonies were New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware.
In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements in New Jersey. The English later seized control of the region, naming it the Province of New Jersey. It was granted as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkley, 1st Baron Berkley of Stratton. At this time,it was named after the largest of the British Channel Islands, Jersey, where Carteret had been born. New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War.
King Charles II granted the land for the Pennsylvania Colony to William Penn on March 4, 1681 as payment for a debt the crown owed his family. As a proprietary colony, Penn governed Pennsylvania, yet its...
