después de diseñar y probar un pre cuestionario en el otoño de 1951, se capacitó a más de 22.000 voluntarios de la Sociedad Americanadel centro de investigaciones para el estudio.
Entre 1 de enero y el 31 de mayo de 1952. Que enrroled temas en 394 países en nueve estados. El tema a todoslos hombres entre las edades de 50 y 69 años ,respondió a una cuestionario simple confidencial sobre sus hábitos de fumar, tanto en el pasado o presente. untotal de 187.783 hombres se mantuvieron con éxito el seguimiento de los próximos 44 meses.
Certificados de defunción se obtuvieron para todos los quemurieron, y la información médica adicional se reunió para aquellos que se informó que murió de cáncer. Todos juntos 11.870 defunciones, de las cuales 2.249 seatribuyeron al cáncer

death certificates were obtained for all who died , and additional medicalinfomation was gathered for those who were reported to have died of cancer. all together 11.870 deaths were reported , of which 2.249 were attributed to cancer
