Introducción

En la actualidad, el concepto de "desarrollo económico" tiene dos dimensiones: el crecimiento económico y la calidad de vida (satisfacción delas necesidades básicas, tanto materiales como espirituales). Sin embargo, es comprensible incluir el tema de la calidad de vida dentro del "desarrollo humano", con lo cual reducimos el concepto anterior a las consideraciones sobre la generación de riqueza o, lo que es lo mismo, sobre el incremento de la producción de bienes y servicios.
El crecimiento es una medida del bienestar de la poblaciónde un país o región económica y del éxito de las políticas económicas. Implícitamente, se supone que un elevado crecimiento económico es beneficioso para el bienestar de la población, es decir que un elevado crecimiento económico sería un resultado deseado por las autoridades políticas y por la población de un país.
