Day 2

In prison, often without charge

Over fifty Christians were arrested in 2008 for their faith. Possibly the figure is higher. Some were released the same day; others were kept for months. Inside prison, apart from grim living conditions, there is the risk of solitary confinement, or worse, and worrying uncertainty. Arrested in May 2008,Mahmood Azad and Arash Basirat were kept in solitary confinement. On July 15th they were put in a cell together. Neither of them had been charged. In early August they came before a Revolutionary Court and were accused of ‘apostasy’, putting them potentially on death row. But on September 23rd they were released. The arrest of Christians has continued in 2009. This has two aims. One is to get moreinformation about the house churches, so computers and mobile phones are confiscated and prisoners are constantly questioned. The other aim is to intimidate. With these arrests they hope to frighten active Christians so either they will lie low or leave the country.

PRAY FoR tHe PeRSecuted
u For the presence of the Holy Spirit to be with all who are arrested for their faith. u For the familiesof the prisoners. u For intimidation of the church to stop.
