The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas and the third in the world (afterthe lion and the tiger), is also the only member of the gender “Panthera” found on this continent and lives from almost desert places like Arizona desert or Mexican plateau to tropical forests like theAmazon.
In Mexico this species is distributed from the rainforests of southern Mexico, to the “Rio Grande” in the gulf and in the “Sierra Madre Occidental” of the Pacific coast to the borderwith Belize and Guatemala. Usually, the altitude of these areas is 1000 meters above the ocean.
The weight of an adult jaguar goes from 45 to 130 kg, the length from the nose to tip of tailis 1.70 to 2.30 m, and has a lifespan of 20 years. Its coat is yellowish brown with black spots of irregular shape (called rosettes). However, some may be black with spots of the same color. Despiteits heavy appearance, the jaguar is very agile, and nothing runs long distances.
Adult females have household habits, a difference from males are more homeless and away from his home, whenthey have territorial disputes. Despite evidence of long trips that make certain cattle, these animals are sedentary when they are in their preferred hab itat.
It is almost exclusivelynocturnal and has great ability to see in the dark during the day lies hidden somewhere among the rocks or thick weeds. The hunting jaguar stalk its prey, hiding near a sidewalk or where drinking water.They are solitary and generally found in the jungles bordering the great rivers and mangroves.
It feeds mainly on peccaries, deer, monkeys, tapirs, raccoons, badgers, armadillos,rabbits and other small mammals as well as birds, fish, dogs, crocodiles, alligators, lizards, snakes, turtles and their eggs and even, carrion. Where is abundant food, they often return to eat several...
