My participation in extracurricular activities was to serve as a volunteer in an animal shelter. During high schoolyears one of the curriculum requirements is to have forty(40) hours contact minimum of community service. I decided to be in a place where I enjoy my time and identify myself with the project. Thisproject is in Humacao, Puerto Rico and is named “Santuario Mi Pequeño Albergue”, the volunteer administrator is Miss Diana Diaz and really she loves her work after her duty as a teacher. I was sosatisfy with my experience that I passed more than 40 hours. I will describe my duties, my participation in the project and how I learned to be responsible and caring with animals.
After school hoursfour days a week and 3 hours daily ” hands on the project . Every day I pulled the dogs out of the cages and let them play. While the dogs were playing I cleaned the cages and placed them cleancloths and old newspapers. Then put clean dishes for each puppy. I put in every dish clean dry food and clean water for each dog. Then take care for the injured dogs giving special attention examplemedicine them food and water. Finally placed in their cages until the next day.
My participation in the project was complete giving more time for the dogs to keep them happy and well cared. Forseveral Saturdays doing other duties related to the project example of some of them are spending time grooming that included bathing and combing. Also recycled newspapers and took them to the project.Collect dog food to carry on several occasions. The area outside the shelter trimmed lawn and some trees pruned to maintain green areas for dogs to play. Everything was total commitment and feelingsfor this animal shelter.
During this service to the community, I have learned that there are people living in a mission that only God can understand. It's hard every day caring for a project...
