Resumen
Este artículo analiza las posibilidades narrativas y escenográficas que la tecnología de realidad aumentada
aporta a las artes escénicas. A partir del desarrollo de un caso práctico y laimplementación y posterior
análisis de un kit de herramientas específicamente creadas para el mismo, en este texto abordamos una
revisión de los resultados obtenidos y planteamos las bases para una correcta integración de la realidad
aumentada en la acción escénica. Como describimos más adelante, esta integración se puede hacer
efectiva en distintas etapas del proceso teatral, tanto en las fases iniciales dediseño espacial y de atrezzo
como a través de la incorporación de actores virtuales en la escena o el diseño de estrategias narrativas
mixtas, que combinen escenografía real y virtual.
El análisis propuesto en este articulo gira en torno a la descripción del proceso de creación seguido en el
desarrollo de la pieza teatral “The Ultimate Commodity”. Esta propuesta ha sido realizada íntegramente apartir del presupuesto inicial de estudiar las posibilidades conceptuales, argumentales, estéticas, narrativas
y especialmente de concreción técnica efectiva de la realidad aumentada basada en reconocimiento de
patrones en la escena teatral. Paralelamente al diseño de esta obra, hemos desarrollado una herramienta
informática llamada ARTheater con el fin de facilitar la incorporación de estatecnología en la creación
teatral prescindiendo de cuestiones complejas de programación, lo que sin duda pensamos que favorecerá
la experimentación en esta área.

THE HYBRIDISING TO STAGE: AUGMENTED REALITY AND THEATER
Abstract
This article analyzes the narratives and stenographic possibilitiesthat the augmented reality technology
can contribute to the performing arts. Starting from the development of a performance that use the
augmented reality technology we implemented a software toolkit specifically created for it, in this text
we approached a revision of the obtained results and raised the bases for a correct integration of the
augmented reality in the theater. As we described below,this integration can be made effective in different
stages of the theater process, as much in the initial phases of space design and atrezzo as through the
incorporation of virtual actors in the scene or the design of mixed narrative strategies that combine real
and virtual stage scene.
The analysis made in this article tour around the description of the process of creation followed in thedevelopment of the theater piece "The Ultimate Commodity". This proposal has been made with the initial
intention of study the conceptual, aesthetic, narratives and especially technological possibilities of the
augmented reality integration in the theater scene. At the same time of the design of this performance,
we have developed a software toolkit called ARTheater with the purpose of facilitating theincorporation
of this technology in the theater. This toolkit permits the creation of AR theater without complex questions
of programming, simply using a graphical user interface; we think that it will help the experimentation in
this area.
