Every year, from the 12 to the 18 of July, more than 200,000 tourists and pilgrims arrive in the small town of La Tirana (72 km from Iquique). The visitors dance and sing to celebrate Chile´s patronsaint.
The festival is in honor to the Virgin of Carmel ,but some traditions, such as music, masks, and costumes, come from the indigenous Andean peoples and have historical meaning. Descendants ofthese indigenous peoples now travel to the festival to make promises before the Saint and receive blessings in return.
Cada año, desde el 12 hasta el 18 de julio, más de 200.000 turistas yperegrinos llegan a la pequeña localidad de La Tirana (72 km de Iquique). Los visitantes bailan y cantan para celebrar la patrona de Chile.
El festival es en honor a la Virgen del Carmelo, pero algunastradiciones, como la música, máscaras y disfraces, venido de los pueblos indígenas andinos y tienen un significado histórico. Los descendientes de estos pueblos indígenas ahora viajan al festival para hacerpromesas ante el Santo y recibir bendiciones a cambio.

The Sanctuary of La Tirana is Ceremonial square and the main attraction is the church. There is an image of the Crucified Christfrom the XVIII century behind the altar and there are the images of the Virgin of Carmel and Jesus of Nazareth.
The most important event of the festival is the procession of Las Diabladas,or Danceof the Devil. People wear extraordinary costumes and masks of birds, snakes, or devils and dance to drums and flutes in front of the sanctuary.
The music and dancing go on 24 hours a day for the wholeweek while visitors enjoy foods and shop at kiosks all around the town.
El Santuario de La Tirana es la plaza ceremonial y el principal atractivo es la iglesia. Hay una imagen de Cristo crucificadodel siglo XVIII, detrás del altar y no son las imágenes de la Virgen del Carmen y Jesús de Nazaret.
