Passives
The passive is often used when the agent of the action is either not known or is unimportant. In scientific writing the passive is especially present as WHAT is more oftenmore important than WHO.

Example: The equipment is prepared for the experiment at the beginning of the day. PRESENT PASSIVE = to be (in present simple) + past participle
