In this project we are going to investigate about the batteries pollutants, how they are contaminating our planet, and what it worse, how we are not doing something.

Besides mentioningthis problematic, we are going to say some ideas that we can follow so we can stop with this contamination.

Batteries are devices that convert chemical energy generated by the reaction ofits components into electrical energy. They present a positive and a negative electrode. The battery contains more than one cell or cells connected by a permanent device.

The main components of thebatteries are mercury, cadmium, nickel and manganese; another component is called an ionic conductor electrolyte.

The batteries are thrown with the rest of the trash being dumped in landfills,where they are suffering the corrosion of the housings, resulting in leakage of internal electrolytes, dragging heavy metals. The is the release of toxic compounds to soils, surface water and groundwater.Landfill fires represent a significant contribution from pollutants in the air.

Common batteries are composed of carbon an zinc, plus a high mercury content. In alkaline batteries, the content ofmercury is also high and are made from manganese dioxide and zinc.

There are studies showing that 35% of mercury pollution is caused bye batteries that incinerated together with household garbage.| | |
