October 2005 Dear International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate:  Congratulations on becoming an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate and  congratulations on your commitment to this challenging endeavor!  We know you have worked  hard to reach this point and we know the next two years will be rewarding for each of you.  Over the next year and a half you will be required to write an Extended Essay, which is a compulsory component of the IB Program.  This essay is designed to give you an opportunity to  do critical research on a subject you are interested in. The skills you have developed over the last  two years in the research process and in writing will provide you with the expertise you will need  to accomplish this task.  Research is an important component of most college curricula and the Extended Essay is looked at by many colleges as an indication of your readiness to do college­  level research. Careful planning and keeping up with the benchmarks listed in this booklet will  help you to meet the required due dates.  It is important to remember that there are many people in the school who will help you  with this project by providing guidance, emotional support and technical assistance.  Ms. Amiss  (camiss@aacps.org), the IB District Coordinator, is available to both students and parents to  address questions on procedure and requirements.  Your school­level IB coordinators, Dr.  Mitchell (epmitchell@aacps.org) at Old Mill High School and Ms. Mete (fmete@aacps.org) at  Annapolis High School, as always will be available to answer questions and provide advice.  The Extended Essay Coordinators, Mrs. Sheils (ksheils@aacps.org) at Old Mill High School and  Ms. Kravetz (skravetz@aacps.org) at Annapolis High School, can answer questions about the  Extended Essay requirements and the general criteria used to assess them.  As media specialists,  they will provide you with time to discuss the best resources for your essay and assist you in locating this information should you need it. Remember, the media specialists are knowledgeable  about the MLA and APA formats for citing sources and can provide you with samples of both.  Once you have chosen the general subject for your Extended Essay, you will ask a  teacher to act as your EE supervisor.  This teacher must agree to the arrangement and should ...
