Language In Our Knowledge

‘The vocabulary we have does more than communicate our knowledge; it shapes what we can know’. Evaluate this claim with reference to different areas of knowledge.
Communication is one of the mostimportant elements that forms the human society and builds up the human race the way it is. Communication is the key factor that has allowed mankind to evolve and progress. Having each generationdiscovering and inventing for society’s improvement, communication was essential to transmit each generation’s legacy. Thus, the importance of language is seen, being the base of communication. Even thoughlanguage has proven to be effective throughout human history, it does have its limitations. In this essay I will seek to analyze the way in which the vocabulary we use does not only communicate ourknowledge but also shapes what we can know. It will be seen how language can be distorted with the vocabulary we have due to fact that this vocabulary leaves much space for interpretation. Then it isshown that problems with vocabulary are found because many times, the vocabulary at hand is not enough to express oneself. These problems are shown by comparing the two Areas of Knowledge of the Artsand of Mathematics.
One of the biggest barriers of the vocabulary we use in general is that it leaves much space for interpretation. Precise as it is, language will never be able to be precise enoughto accommodate to the infinitely many situations that a person can encounter in life. For example, it is usual that in a conversation a person hears something that can be interpreted in more than oneway and mean many things at the same time. However, whenever this actually happens, it is almost immediately solved with the hearer reasoning over what he listened to and thus tries to interpret itin the correct way. This in most cases solves the communication problem, since the receptor has a level of awareness of the situation enough to conclude which interpretation is the correct one....
