RIM current failure with their Blackberry, causing lost in profit, and market shared was due to over estimating their Blackberry, ignoring the competition and their poor management and leadershipsskills. In order to improve and remain a strong competitor in the smartphone market a couple of actions needs to happen at a corporate level. There are three alternatives to RIM core problem. RIM’s topmanager Thorsten Heins is going to take on a different leadership style to improve communication in the organization, RIM also is going to start implementing a new contingency plans to help themprepare for any unexpected event that might have a significant impact on the organization. As well, some skills that the managers at RIM could change would be their cognitive biases, mainly their illusionof control.
The first step that RIM and new CEO Thorsten Heins is to improve their managerial and communication skills. The lack of managements trickles down throughout the company leading to overconfidence in their products, unrealistic deadlines, and poor communication.
“One former employee says the situation got so bad that internal deadlines simply weren’t taken seriously. As a productlaunch date inched closer, it was common for a few teams working on the same project to realize they were unlikely to make the date, but no one spoke up, under the belief that another team was evenfarther behind” (Castaldo, 2012)
By combining a direct leadership strategy giving the subordinates what exactly needs to be done and guidelines for performing those tasks, and at the same time using anachievement oriented leadership style, setting high goals and expectations, and displaying confidence in your managers Thorsten Heins can increase performances. “it is widely believed that implementingperformance measurement makes effective and efficient management possible” (Hoontis and Kim, 2012, p. 162).
