CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM
There are three distinct legal jurisdictions in the United Kingdom: England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.[6] Each has its own legal system, distinct history and origins. Although they have different legal systems, there are fields of law which apply across the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom does not have a single legal system since it wascreated by the political union of previously independent countries.
English law, which applies in England and Wales  based on common- law principles
Northern Ireland law, which applies in Northern Ireland,
Scots law, which applies in Scotland based on civil-law principles, with common law elements
THE COURT SYSTEM

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom is the highest court in theland for all criminal and civil cases in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, and for all civil cases in Scots law.
In England and Wales, the court system is headed by the Senior Courts of England and Wales, consisting of the Court of Appeal, the High Court of Justice (for civil cases) and the Crown Court (for criminal cases).
The Courts of Northern Ireland follow the same pattern.
InScotland the chief courts are the Court of Session, for civil cases, and the High Court of Justiciary, for criminal cases.
CONSTITUTION
There is no written English constitution (i.e., there is no one single document called the constitution); "constitutional law" concerns issues such as the role of the state, the protection of individual rights, etc
There is no official codification of Englishstatutes.
Any statute passed by Parliament is by definition valid and not subject to review by the courts. Parliament alone may act to change a law.
GOVERNMENT
Along with the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the Crown is an integral part of the institution of Parliament. The Queen plays a constitutional role in opening and dissolving Parliament and approving Bills before they become law.Parliament
The highest legislative authority in the United Kingdom. Made up of the House of Commons, House of Lords and the Queen (who is the UK's current hereditary monarch).
Crown
This is another way of referring to the monarchy - which is the oldest part of the system of government in this country. Time has reduced the power of the monarchy, and today it is broadly ceremonial. The current UKmonarch is Queen Elizabeth II.
The business of Parliament takes place in two Houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Their work is similar: making laws (legislation), checking the work of the government (scrutiny), and debating current issues. The House of Commons is also responsible for granting money to the government through approving Bills that raise taxes. Generally, thedecisions made in one House have to be approved by the other. In this way the two-chamber system acts as a check and balance for both Houses.
The Commons
The Commons is publicly elected. The party with the largest number of members in the Commons forms the government.
Members of the Commons (MPs) debate the big political issues of the day and proposals for new laws. It is one of the key places wheregovernment ministers, like the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, and the principal figures of the main political parties, work.
The Commons alone is responsible for making decisions on financial Bills, such as proposed new taxes. The Lords can consider these Bills but cannot block or amend them.
The Lords
The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament, it complements the work ofthe House of Commons. It makes laws, holds government to account and investigates policy issues. Its membership is mostly appointed and includes experts in many fields.
