One to Remember
From my perspective, every short story has its own structure, a way to tell and express it. I believe all short stories should set the stage with descriptions that spark thereaders visual imagination and should include a plot with a quick start, one that catches us and leaves us wanting for more. It must have an emotional, entertaining, poignant and intriguing sequence thatleads us to discover an explosive plot which makes our imagination fly and transports us into the life of each character. The story should also lead to a single and convincing outcome, preferably onethat is surprising. If we, the readers, do not accept the outcome, the story has not served its purpose. It should also rely on techniques such as dialogue, monologue and simple narration whichallow us to read the story with fluency and give us the ability to understand why every word is absolutely essential. For a short story to be credible, the characters have to be credible too; theiractions have to be inevitably guided by their way of being. We should know everything we can about the characters, where they come from, their motivations, their fears and their tastes. The more we knowabout the characters, the more real they will feel. In other words, I think a short story should have a fun start, a plot full of details and an unexpected ending.
Throughout the semester I wasprivileged to enjoy many short stories I had never read. It is indisputable that I will never forget many of them, but like everything in life, there is always a special one. A Good Man is Hard to Findby Flannery O'Connor is certainly a story that I will read again. Because of it’s plot, full of adventure, intrigue, murder, and a religious angle, I found myself captivated from the beginning ofthe story until I encountered it’s unexpected ending. It is a very simple story, full of dialogue that reveals many details about the characters and, little by little, conveys their feelings to us....
