Little Brother Is Watching

In late 2006, Michael Richards, Seinfeld’s shock-haired neighbor Kramer, found out the hard way that messing up in public is now a whole lot messier. Thanksto the cell phone video camera and the Internet’s latest killer app__YouTube.com__ Richards’ racist meltdown at a heckler during a standup routine in L.A. was viewed by millions. As Richardsdiscovered, Little Brother is watching, again and again, and he is emailing the link to all his friends.
Back in 2005, when Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim founded YouTube, they thought they werebuilding a place where ordinary people could share their favorite camcorder movies, TV moments and, yes, cell phone clips. And share they did. One would have to have been living on one of the moredesolate craters on Pluto not to have seen the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” as lip-synched by two Chinese pranksters. Arguably the site’s tipping point, their dorm-made video spawned a millionimitations and clicked YouTube to the top of every browser bookmark list.
What Chad, Steve, and Jawed couldn’t have predicted was that they were bringing George Orwell’s dystopic 1984 to life in away no one saw coming. While Orwell’s protagonist, Winston Smith, lived a miserable existence, at least he knew he was being watched as he carried out life’s mundane tasks. It was not the same case withUniversity of Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, whose moment of fame came during a game on November 4, 2006. He didn’t anticipate being filmed as he sad on the bench performing his own digitaldownload-from nose to mouth- and having his little picnic uploaded cell phone videos of teachers “losing it” in class-some actually hitting their students. Many of these educators, it is alleged, werepushed to the brink by their pupils for the very purpose of being surreptitiously filmed.
