The Dangers of School Bullying
School bullying is a worldwide growing issue facing children and teenagers every day. Once seemed as teasing or just kids playing around, now bullying has been defined as a major problem. Bullying is defined as: “the unprovoked physical or psychological abuse of an individual by one student or a group of students over time to create an ongoingpattern of harassment and abuse” (Whitted & Dupper, 2005, p.35). This definition clearly shows that bullying is not teasing or a game.  Many people think bullying in schools is believed to be a normal part of school life, however, some people do not realize, that bullying is physically and psychologically harmful to both the bully and the victim. Therefore, bullying must be eliminated from schoolsby raising awareness and increasing supervision. Unfortunately, school bullying would be impossible to completely eliminate, but there are some ways people can help to prevent others from being harmed at their schools. Barack Obama talked about bullying in his presidential nominee acceptance speech, elevating bullying education to a national platform. Obama said: “Bullying isn’t a problem thatmakes headlines everyday. But everyday, it touches the lives of young people all across the country”. Although the United States had created many laws to prevent bullying in most of the states, schools bullying seems to be an ongoing problem.
Thirty percent (30%) of the U.S. students in grades six through ten are involved in moderate or frequent bullying – as bullies, as victims, or as both –according to the results of the first national survey on bullying (Where Peace Lives). Many people are involved in this problem and the effects of bullying can really ruin someone’s life or end it. Bullying can cause negative social, academic, emotional, psychological, and physical consequences on victims, even death. The number of cases of suicide by bullying is on the rise in the U.S. Yes it issuicide, but suicide of another form a form that borders on murder or manslaughter. Victims of bullying get under so much of stress because of people who bullies them; as a result they decide that killing themselves is the best way to stop this problem. Jared High a middle school student was only 13 years-old when he committed suicide after he was brutally assaulted by a school bully, the incident leftJared with extremely low self-esteem, physically and emotionally hurt, he was quiet and kept to himself, nobody knew how much pain he was in (Brenda, Jared’s Story). As the case of Desire Dreyer, even though she was friends, a nice boyfriend there was a group at her school who were so jealous of her that they tormented her every day for being so “perfect” after months of harassment, Desirecouldn’t stand it anymore, she took her life in 2006 (Donna Dreyer, bullycide). In some extreme cases even the bully can end up dying because of the victim getting revenge.
But why do teenagers bully? Well bullies are often fueled by anger and revenge. There’s something usually going on either at home or mentally that is causing them a great amount of emotional stress. So, they take it out on otherpeople who they know won't stand up to them. That’s why the majority of bullies pick on people who appear to have low self esteem. Once that happens, everything can go wrong. If the victim gets bullied many times they can get depressed. That's when they can become unsafe to themselves or to others... Some people do it for laughs or to get a reaction and attention. Which isn’t good, that is asymptom of a sociopathic personality. Sociopaths have an incapacity for love. There are also people involved in bullying other than the bully and the victim, they are the bystanders. Some encourage the bully to keep going; others join when the bullying has begun. However, most of the bystanders are typically and audience for the bully, although some bystanders intervene and try to stop the bullying...
