The magic beam
What can vaporize a diamond, guide a bomb, produce three-dimensional pictures and perform surgery? This sound like it may be the start of a riddle or something from a James Bond movie, but there is a perfectly serious answer: a laser can. Nowadays, we often see and hear the word laser in books, magazines, and on television and radio. The name comes from the initial letters ofLight Amplified by Simulation Emission of Radiation. In 1958, two America scientists, Townes and Schawlow, discovered how the laser principle works, and in 1960, another American, Thomas Maiman, built the first laser machine.
But what is a laser? And what can we use it for today and in the future? Basically, a laser is a beam of light which is so pure and intense that we can do many things with it.Eye surgeons, for example, can repair a detached retina with a very fine laser without harming the eye. Very long lasers can measure precisely how far it is from the earth to the other planets in the solar system. At a more mundane level, a laser reads the bar code on products at a supermarket check-out, or the music on a compact disc (CD).
A laser machine can also produce the three-dimensionalpictures called holograms. There have scientific applications, of course, but the most famous examples are at Disney World. They are three-dimensional, but you can walk straight through them –and sometimes they appear to walk straight through you.
When some people hear the expression ‘’laser beam’’, they may imagine superheroes from the comic fighting fantastic battles in outer space withray-guns. But the laser has already provided us with many more fantastic developments in real life than we will ever see in the comics. In the future, it will certainly be used to five us many more.
