Margaret Thatcher



Margaret Hilda Thatcher, born 13 October 1925, is a British politician and was the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. This is something remarkablebecause she has been the only woman to have ever been in that position and held such for the longest time. Thatcher formerly Roberts, studied chemistry at the University of Oxford and worked fouryears as a research chemist. In 1951 she married Denis Thatcher, a senior oil industry executive, who introduced her to politics. In 1953 being intrigued by politics, she began to study tax law.Furthermore, Thatcher joined the Conservative Party, which her husband and was a member, and in 1959 won a seat in the House of Commons. Two years later she was appointed Secretary of State for SocialAffairs, then Minister of Education and Science, during the tenure of Edward Heath Conservative. She abolished the law that ordered the free distribution of school milk, which caused a wave ofprotests.

In addition, considered the strongest leader of the right wing of the Conservative Party, Thatcher got the party leadership that was held since 1975. Also, Thatcher developed a rigorousprogram for jugular crisis of the British economy by reducing state intervention. Its main tenets were, therefore, liberalism and strict monetarism that was tended to cut social services. Moreover,Thatcher studied the renegotiation for the participation of the United Kingdom into the EEC and the abolition of union power. Her program was supported by popular opinion, and in 1979 the Conservativeswon, and came to power by a wide margin, thus becoming the first British woman held the post of prime minister.

During her government, she managed to reduce inflation and improve the price ofthe pound sterling. However, industrial production declined, with a consequent increase in unemployment tripled since her rise to power. This caused further bankruptcies of companies and banks....
