UPS AND DOWNS ON A ROLLER-COASTER

Introduction:
Math and Physics have always been related throughout the whole time, since we have to use math to find the solution to some physics problems and physics is also applied during our math problems. So for this experiment we are combining the use of both of them, we will use one to compliment the other and viceversa, as well as applying it to a common situation we can see outside of the classroom.

The common object that we will be using is the roller-coaster. Through which we wanted to find the slope of it, so we could answer the question we planted, which was to see if the slope of the roller-coaster affects the acceleration of the cart that is going downwards on the roller-coaster.

In math we willbe focused on the topic of “Linear equations”, since we will be using it to find the slope of the roller-coaster, so we can answer part of the question planted. In physics we will be seeing the topic of “Kinematic Equations” so we can find the acceleration of the cart as it goes downwards. With both pieces of data we can compare what happens and how the slope affects the acceleration. Also we willtake two other examples to verify if the slope of the roller-coaster really does have any effect on how fast the cart moves downwards.

In the end we concluded weather the slope does or does not affect the acceleration of the cart, as it goes downwards on the roller-coaster.

Objective: To find how the slope on a roller-coaster affects the acceleration of the cart through physics andmathematical equations.

Theoretical framework:
In this experiment we related physics and math concepts, some of the math concepts are slope which is the one of the most important terms of this specific experiment. Slope, according to the math book Precalculus III, is defined as:
“Slope is the trigonometric tangent of its angle of inclination.”

“It is to have or take in inclined or obliquedirection or angle onside red with reference to a vertical or horizontal plane; slant.” So slope is the inclination or slant that is formed on a graph that is determining through finding different points on it, using the formula of:

It goes either downwards or upwards, depending on how the slope of the line is, if it is positive it will go upwards and if it is negativeit will go downwards.

As mentioned before we will be combining both Math and Physics in the project, by complimenting one of them with another. So some physics concepts we will be seeing are ones we have seen before, such as acceleration. We found the definition in our Physics I book as:
“Acceleration is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes its velocity.”In a web page we found it stated acceleration as:
“Acceleration is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes its velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity.”

So we can say acceleration is when an object changes velocity over a certain distance and a certain time. Its formula is:

Although there are also some otherequations which can be used to find the acceleration, these equations are called Kinematic Equations and are as follows:

“The kinematic equations are a set of four equations that can be utilized to predict unknown information about an object's motion if other information is known.”

In other words kinematic equations are four different equations that can be used to find...
