Life in Hell caught the attention of Hollywood producer and screenwriter and GracieFilms founder James L. Brooks, who received a copy of the strip by fellow producer Polly Platt.31 34 In 1985, Brooks contacted Groening with the purpose of working on an animation project as yetundefined, 15 which would become a series of animated shorts for the variety show on FOX The Tracey Ullman Show. Originally, Brooks wanted Groening to adapt his characters to life in Hell for theprogram. Fearing the loss of copyright, Groening decided to create something new and designed a cartoon family, the Simpson.4Presuntamente, drew five family members in just fifteen minutos.35
Groening wroteand directed the short stories and all of which were animated by a team including David Silverman and Wes Archer, who later would become directors of the series. The shorts premiered on The TraceyUllman Show on April 19, 1987.
Although The Tracey Ullman Show was not a great success, 31 the popularity of short episode led to a state of half-hour in 1989. The series quickly became a success, to thesurprise of many. Groening said: "Nobody thought The Simpsons would be what ended up being. We were surprised at all" .20
