He was born into a wealthy family: his father, Giulio Cesare, a professor of international law at the University of Pavia and his mother, Alba Mantovani, of Venetian origin, wasthe sister of writer Dino Mantovani. His real name was Dino Buzzati Traverso, and was the second of four children.
It remains to recall the author's interest in this painting, which resulted in worksborn of a mix between text and illustrations (Poem to fumetti, 1969; I Miracoli di Val Morel, 1971). The magical atmosphere, surreal, gothic prose are permeated with a sense of anguish (think of thejustly celebrated story "Sette piani" where along the route of the disease is steeped in a harbinger of death) versus despair the inevitable fate of a paradoxical and ironic pleasure of the reader isguaranteed by a fast writing, captivating, and newspaper article.
The literary work of Dino Buzzati refers-as anticipated-in part to the influence of Kafka by the scorn and the expression of humanhelplessness facing the maze of an incomprehensible world. But it also refers to Surrealism, as happens in stories where the connotation dream is always present. Although perhaps the most convincingattempts to establish relations has to be sought in his relationship with the currents of the existentialists years 1940-1950.
