Dilemma
A payday is a very complicated day for every employee at a bank, and for every customer. From the perspective of an employee, paydays are the busiest days of the month; they receivehundreds of transactions in one day, and they ought to be fast, but at the same time careful because mistakes at banks cost money. For customers, it represents a minimum of three hours spent in a line.There are two different payment methods used in the Dominican Republic: checks and direct deposit in a specific account. The individual that receives checks must necessarily go to a branch. On the otherhand, others may be eligible to receive a debit card from their organization and be paid through it, so they have the option to go to an ATM machine or to use internet banking. Unfortunately, themajority of this population has a low social economic status, and don’t have access to this kind of technology or don’t have the ability to use it.
In recent years, our banks have been introducingtechnology applied to service in the banking industry. All five banks have internet banking, giving customers the option to do multiples transactions in the commodity of their homes. The problem is thatonly a small percentage of the population can benefit from this technology. MSN Latino Noticias (2010) commented that according to INDOTEL (Instituto Dominicano de Telecomunicaciones, in English,Dominican Institute of Telecommunications) “only 28 percent of the Dominican population has access to internet.” Not only that, but they were not born with internet and never learned how to use it. Nowadaysthey refuse to utilize it.
They also have a considerable quantity of ATM machines. According to El Suplidor (2010), Banreservas has 335 ATM machines all over the country, Banco Popular has more than500, Banco BHD has 160, Banco Leon has 155 and Banco Progreso has 116.
