INTRODUCTION
1. Abstract
It is my intent to show the connection between Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla and the events that took place in the Catholic Church during and after Vatican II. The music that came out of Ariel Ramirez’ inspiration was influenced by the people with whom he interacted, and also by the Catholic Church documents of the 1960s. VaticanII documents, musical influences, different interpretations of his work, and his personal life are just some of the topics that I will cover in this essay. Based on sound historical research I will make the connection between the Catholic Church documents and the creation of Ariel Ramirez’ mass. I will also point out the way Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla influenced other Latin American countries andcomposers. I will discuss the general overview and the story behind Ariel Ramirez’ mass. I will also analyze in detail two sections of this mass setting, as well as different interpretations of these two movements: Kyrie and Gloria. In my conclusion I will discuss how an historical and musical analysis, based on reliable sources, will help any choral conductor to value the importance and thebeauty of this particular composition. A sound historical approach will also help the choral/instrumental conductor to develop an authentic, effective, and enjoyable interpretation of Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla.

2. Research, Methodology, Sources, and Inspiration
The research on Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla is based on the findings from the different sources that I consulted (The Liturgy Documents:A Parish Resource 1991; Ariel Ramirez: Misa Criolla 2009; Alcalde 1995, 1997; Bach ; Bensusan 1975; Bishops 1996; Cabrera 1984; Cha 1987; fe 2008; giulietta95 2008; Koob 2004; lucpebo 2007; McHugh 1998; Olguin August 2003; Ramirez, 1979, 2009; rbrom19 2007, 2007; Seed 1970; Spain 1992; Worship 2002).

As for the methodology and organization of my research paper, I followed a two foldapproach: historical and musical analysis. First, I gathered as much historical information as possible on Ariel Ramirez’ life, time, historical background and people he interacted with to gain a better understanding of the elements that conditioned his music writing. Then, I proceeded to analyze two sections from Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla: the Kyrie and the Gloria.
There are many reasons why I choseto analyze the Kyrie and Gloria from Ariel Ramirez’ Misa Criolla. Some of these reasons are personal, and some are academic.
