By not being within the margin of society Martin Luther King, had the ability to be involve in the nation’s progress regarding equality for the African American community. Dr. King wasthe leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in which he promoted nonviolent civil right movements across the country specifically in the southern states (Letter from a BirminghamJail). But being involved in different states fighting for justice of his people was something that many opponents entirely disagree on. This was the point of view of eight Alabama clergymen who in April12, 1963, stated, “… we believe this kind of facing of issues can best be accomplished by citizens of our own metropolitan area, white and Negro, meeting with their knowledge and experience of thelocal situation” (Introduction to Letter from Birmingham Jail). This statement was released after Martin Luther King lead a nonviolent march in Birmingham, Alabama, a state that was consider to be themost segregated in the country. It was in this event where Dr. King along with other civil right activist were treated brutally by local authorities and put behind bars (The King Center). To the eyes ofthe clergymen and people who opposed to the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King did not had the right to intervene with the state’s laws. However the reality was other.
