Model Millionaire
subtitled it ‘A Note of Admiration’, admiration, presumably, for both Hughie
Erskine and Baron Hausberg. The former (Hughie) represents social concern:
speaking out against exploitation and sacrificing his own comfort to help one
who he perceives as needy. The Baron is another of Wilde’s individualists, one who has ‘realised himself’ and, contrary to the expectations of the artist
Alan Trevor (who could perhaps be seen as the voice, or ‘wisdom’, of society),
turns out to be warmhearted and generous. He is what a millionaire should
be—a philanthropist who will help others, rather than a cynic sneering at
others’ good natures. In other words, a Model Millionaire. Wilde has created an ideal for others to aspire to: Hughie and the Baron have both, in their own
ways, risen above the petty and selfish society around them.
Wilde’s hopeful vision for humanity has been stated in one of its most explicit forms.
The social criticisms in The Model Millionaire are more often offhand comments
than direct statements.
Hughie Erskine is a gorgeous and well-known man. He has every accomplishment exceptearning money. He tries everything; from being an investor, a tea- merchant, to selling dry sherry. Nothing works and what makes thing worse that he is in love. The girl is Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired Colonel. Both are madly in love and adoring each other. The problem is, Hughie had no idea how he could manage to get ten thousand pounds to get her hand in marriage, as her father hasdemand. One day, Hughie’s benevolent nature leads him to a wonderful consequence. Given ten thousand by a ‘beggar’ as a wedding present, Hughie could marry Laura instantly with no doubt.
Hughie is expecting the millionaire to be mad at him because he falsely regarded him as a beggar. Ironically Baron Hausberg, the millionaire gives him ten thousands to show his appreciation towards Hughie’scharitable nature.
the story was held in London where their currency is pound sterling.
The socioeconomic setting shows any beggars are rarely found at the street as being mention by Alan; This might mean that only few people are living hardly, others lived comfortably.
In my point of view, this story is quite interesting because it reminds us about moral values that sometime and somehow we hadforgotten or neglect. Being a well educated human should make us aware of others people burden. As the saying goes, what goes around comes around. Without no doubt, kindness will be repay by kindness, no matter how, when and where it should be. Even though ‘the beggar’ is not a true beggar, Hughie’s sincerity to help him without hoping anything in return can be symbolized as we shouldn’t takethings for granted.
The Moral of this story is "APPEARANCES ARE DECEPTIVE".
El modelo millonario: Aunque vos estes mal, siempre hay alguien peor que vos, y si vos das, se te regresa.
