Etymology
Fiji's main island is known as Viti Levu and it is from where the name derives Fiji because it sounds so common in English in the neighboring islands of Tonga and Vitis comes from the Latin meaning 'vine' .11History
Fiji's history begins when the first inhabitants arrived in Southeast Asia, long before they were discovered by European explorers in the seventeenth century. However, it was not until the nineteenth century that Europeans came to the islands to settle permanently. The islands came under British control as a colony in 1874. Independence was granted in 1970. Democratic rule was interrupted bytwo military coups in 1987, caused in response to excessive influence of the Indo-Fijian community about the government. This community, one of the largest in the country, descended from farmers arrived from India during the British Mandate.
The 1990 constitution guaranteed Fijian control of Fiji, but was a strong Indian emigration, the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, butensured that Melanesians to become the majority. Amendments drafted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Were conducted free and peaceful elections in 1999 that resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian. A year later, he was deposed in a coup led by George Speight, a hardline Fijian nationalist. Then Frank Bainimarama, leader of the army, made a kickback to paralyze the Speight. Democracywas restored in late 2000, and Laisenia Qarase, who had meanwhile led interim government, was elected Prime Minister with the implicit support of Bainimarama.
For a country of its size, Fiji has exceptionally capable armed forces, and has been one of the countries that have contributed to peacekeeping missions that the UN has organized in various parts of the world.
On December 4, 2006,Commodore Bainimarama made a new coup against Qarase. Bainimarama had turned against the government for clemency with the Qarase acting before the Speight coup. The troops surrounded Qarase's residence, detaching it from the rest of the capital. Gunmen formed barricades around the capital, including around Qarase's office. Soldiers also attacked police stations and seized weapons from the only armedpolice unit, as well as disarming the Qarase own bodyguard. Bainirama has become the de facto president of the country, imposing Jona Senilagakali as prime minister.
On 1 September 2009, Fiji is fully suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations by refusing to give in to demands to hold elections in 2010.
