On June 2011, UK researches developed the world’s most powerful electron microscope that uses glass beads to get a highest optical resolution so far.
The first operational electronmicroscope was presented by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll in 1932, the microscope had capacity of four hundred power magnification; 6 years latter Rusksa had the first version on the market.

The microscopeachieves vision in detail closer to 50.000 millionths meters to show a map “nanoscopic scale” which refers to structures with a length scale, the world never seen before.
The professor Lin Li of theUniversity of Manchester, where the microscope was developed assured that the microscope can have an important role in the areas such as cellular observation, because the Scientifics could examineinside the human cells, viruses and biomolecules “in action”.
The new technology uses short light waves that are emitted close to the object; the waves break through the glass lenses and provided thelight to a traditional microscope.

the key

The glass beads that collect the light and then send it to a standard microscope, allowed researches see with their own eyes a high level of detailuntil now accessible through methods like atomic force microscopy.
The scientist used glass beads with a diameter between two and nine millionths, which are placed on the surface of the samples.
Theyshowed that a high resolution is reached and surpasses all records made by optical microscopy
