Course description and objective. This course introduces students to the study and analysis of Hispanicliterature within a historical and aesthetic context. Students will learn in general about the fundamental features (origins, trends, styles, discursive development, and so forth) of narrative, poetry,drama, and expository prose within the Hispanic tradition. The purpose of the course is for students to acquire Spanish language and analytical skills developed through readings of literary texts,class discussions, and writing assignments.

Requirements:
Regularattendance. Class participation grade depends on active participation in class.
Students are responsible for answering the “Cuestionarios” (questionnaires) from all reading assignments inAproximaciones. These readings and questionnaires will be the basis for the unannounced pop quizzes which will be given periodically (7-9 approximately) at the beginning of class—at the end of the semester thequiz with the lowest score will be dropped.
Two (2) analytical papers on two of the four literary genres studied in class: narrative, poetry, drama, and essay. Each paper must be typed, doublespaced, 4-5 pages long (1500 words) minimum using a #12 Times New Roman or similar font.
A midterm exam which will cover material studied during the first half of the semester.
A final exam on materialcovered during the second half of the semester.
