Phosphorus use in detergents | One World Essay
Phosphorus, P, is a non-metal element, with 15 protons and electrons, 16 neutronsand a atomic mass of 31 and melting point of 44.2˚C and a boiling point of 280.5˚C. The abundance of phosphate in the Earth crust is 0.00150 kilograms. Its price in the market is $30 per 100g. Whenwe speak of phosphorus you must know that phosphorus can be used in three different ways: it’s used to create matches, in detergents and also a vital plant nutrient (as fertilizers).
Phosphorusdetergents are use all around the globe, because of its multiple uses in cleaning. Additionally, you must know that most of the detergents use phosphorus as one of its main chemicals components that canproduce positive and negative effects. The use of phosphorus in detergents doesn’t always help; and although it helps to eliminate the “hard water” and also separate the dirt from the water, itpollutes the water and increases the growth of algae, thus it also decreases the oxygen for the aquatic life. When phosphorus is thrown into the water it disturbs the phosphoric cycle, and this raises thegrowth of algae and duckweed that spread through the water surface, prohibiting the sunlight to go through, in addition it absorbs the oxygen, unavailing the other organisms to live in the habitat. Thisis known as eutrophication. As cases of polluted water bodies because of phosphorus are seen more frequently around the world, many countries have banned the use of the phosphorus in detergents,making this topic a global issue.
Phosphorus impacts interact with the environments of its surroundings. As phosphorus detergents waste is dump in the lakes and water bodies it affects the environment,by polluting and contaminating the water.
