Petroleum is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that occur in the sedimentary rocks of the Earth in the form of gases (natural gas), liquids (crude oil), semisolids (bitumen), or solids (wax orasphaltite).
As oil properties we can cite:
• As physical properties we can mention:
o it is a dark liquid that shows fluorescent green and blue components.
o Its smell is not very pleasant by thepresence of sulfur and nitrogen compounds.
o Its density is less than that of water with values which range from 0.615 to 0.994 g / cm 3. The only ones that may exceed the value 1 of water are thoseof the asphalt type.
o It's insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as ether, benzene, chloroform, etc.
• As chemical properties we can say:
o it burns with heat supply.
o Ithas a calorific power of 11000 Kcal / Kg. That is, is the heat released when a kilo of this combusted completely.
About the methods to separate the compaounds, we can remark that:
o Separatingmixtures that have more similar properties require special techniques. Adsorption and desorption properties of the components of a mixture can be separated. Activated carbon removing colors and odors fromorganic compounds, butter absorbing the perfume of roses iodine getting adsorbed over starch are some examples.
o The other special technique for separating mixtures is the chromatography which usesthe flow of the liquid and effusion of gases in to consideration. Applying distribution law is one more special separating technique. When there is a mixture of substances, adding a third component assolvent added to it in which one of the components is more soluble. For example Iodine is soluble in water to an extent.
