The British people show nearly no hope for their politicians. It is not that they don’t respect them; it is just that they don’t trust them. Political parties in Britain are one good example ofcooperation since the system pairs an MP from one party with an MP from another party. The results are great: they know they are going to vote on opposite sides so they don’t even bother to show up for thevote. This way, they avoid cheating and getting involved in issues that turn out to a waste of time.
There are many political parties in Britain. One of them is the Labour party, formed at thebeginning of the 20th century from an alliance of trade unionists and intellectuals. They focus on equality and the weaker people in society, more concerned to provide full social services than to keepincome tax low. They are voted by the working class and a small group of middle class.
On the opposite side, the Conservatives, formed from a group of MPs known as the Tories in the early 19th century,stand for a hierarchical authority and minimal government interference in the economy. They also focus on national defence, internal law and order. They’re usually voted by the richer sections of thesociety.
There’s also a liberal party called the Liberal Democrats who were formed in the late 80s from a union of the Liberals and the Social Democrats. They’re in favour of greater unification withthe EU; they also focus on environment, more than the other parties. They’re mostly voted by the middle class.
Nowadays, the traditional confidence in the British political system is weakened. Thismay be caused by the perceived style of politics and the constitutional significance of the democracy. Politicians seem to worry about their image in the media more than policy matters.
