“Power, pollution and the Internet”.
Well, in California, the social network Facebook, has caused some problems to a company, so they have to fixed it.The electricity that the members use was overheating the Ethernet sockets and other components, so the sockets get burned.
The engineer had the idea ofbuy any fan for the burned sockets, because with the air, it would get cold.
That was 6 years ago, when they were only 10 million users on Facebook, thenetwork was not popular as right now. Now it exist servers called data centers, it has rows and rows of servers spread on hundreds of square feet it meansthey´re industrial coolers.
Data centers were design not to waste energy, to consume little quantities of it and save more energy.
They further rely onbanks that emit diesel exhaust. The pollution has been going up, but authorities said that it is faulting the clean air condition
There are many datacenters considered as Toxic Air Contaminant Inventory because all the pollution they produce whit the data centers, all that pollution affect not only to thecompany, it affects the city and the country too.
The data centers only use 6 percent to 12 percent of electricity that they produce.
So that means datacenters waste electricity too, because they are not using all the electricity that they produce and all the other electricity that is out of the 12 percent isbeing wasted, so they are not keeping a lot of electricity.
It said that is an industry dirty secret and the person who say something will be fired.
