Mario was a man that was not accepted for being homosexual. He thought that the easiest way he could make people accept him was to change his gender. He did not want a person that watched him the love of his life, who was a man, feel bad when they are walking down and holding hands. Mario was a man that decided tohave surgery to change his gender from man to woman. Moreover, his name wasn’t Mario anymore, now it was Mary. The big worry that she had is how she is going to change her gender on her driver license. After that she was really worried about what people are going to say about her when she asks, “How can I change my gender on my driver’s license?” She also was thinking, “Are they going to ignore meor laugh?” The big question is how will be the reaction of the people that work at the Department of Public Safety (DPS)? Mary started to sweat before she called the DPS and she couldn’t even hold the cellphone because her hands were totally wet. Can you imagine this? She cannot even call the DPS just because she was really scared and nervous. Mary is officially the kind of person that really caresabout what people say about her. After all, she started to think more positive about this fear that she has, “I need to be stronger and I don’t need to be scared about stupid things, damn it! Why I am acting like this, here we go.”
Finally, she decided to call the DPS and she asked the big question that she was worry about, “Yes sir, I am wondering how I can change my driver’s license gender,obviously, the receptionist asked, “Why?”. Mary was now okay about this subject and she thought that it is not going to be a problem, the receptionist is cool, so she started to talk and tell him the story that she had surgery to change her gender but she really needed to change her gender because her insurance required it.” The receptionist of the driver’s license office said to her, “Can youplease give me a moment? I need to talk with my manager because he is the only one that knows about this kind of change on the driver’s license.” Mary waited around fifteen minutes on the phone and was starting to think what they are talking about at that moment. After one minute more, she just heard the phone disconnect because they hung up the phone. Mary started to get disappointed and think abouthow people can ignore and disrespect me like this. She decided to call again. It was the second call and she said, “Hello, this is Mary Henderson. I called twenty minutes ago and you put me on wait for more than fifteen minutes, but I just wanted to know if you already resolved my problem about changing the gender on my driver’s license.” Sadly the receptionist just laughed and hung up the phonewithout answering anything for her. In this moment she was more than disappointed, she was mad and sad at the same time. She could not really describe how annoyed she was. Her annoyance was mixed with many feelings, so she started to spill tears of the desperation that she was going through. She was really stressed about her insurance, so she kept trying but on the third call something irreverenthappened. The receptionist did not even let Mary finished talking before hanging up.
Mary was disillusioned about this situation. Mary started to be depressed for a long time and started to go to a psychologist to talk about that situation and also started to take pills for her depression. This kind of situation put down her self-esteem. The receptionist at the DPS destroyed her self-esteem justbecause the reason that he was an insolent person that does not have respect for another person’s beliefs. Humanity needs to learn to be more respectful and open minded with homosexual and transsexual people accepting them and stop being impertinent because they are affecting their lives.
