Issues Surrounding the Use of Social Media in Counseling
Social Media is defined as a web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-pubilc profile within a boundedsystem, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, a (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system (Boyd & Ellison 2008).According to Schultze (2006), a large-scale internet project involving 80 counseling professional in Germany found that online clients benefited from psychological anonymity. This initiative found thatclients who communicated by email felt protected because they were surrounded by the familiarity of their own home and could be “invisible” (p.623).
Types of Communication
Among all the types of socialmedia, email has become a traditional method for people to communicate and they expect counselors to reply emails quickly. Online chat allows real time conversation over the computer and opened doors tomore layered types of social networking through dedicated social media sites such as myspace, facebook, and twitter
Coyle and Vaugh (2008) defined social networking as “the use of a specific type ofweb site focused on the creation and growth of online social networks which allows users to interact” (p.13). There are several support programs offered online. Virtual World “allow individuals toform “new kinds of relationships and [live] new kinds of lives outside bodies in entirely re-imagined selves” (Daniel, 2008, abstract)
Generational differences. It is easy to assume that youngergeneration of counselors are more inclined to incorporate social media into their daily lives. However, older counselors are increasingly using social media and both generations should be concerned aboutthe ethical issues that arise with clients in this area.
