Developing Your Game Plan: Getting from Here to There
When someone’s managing a project it’s basic to think in detail, everyone has to consider the time and resources it will take to finish theproject successfully. The best way to determine how long and how much work a project will take to complete is to break down the required project work into its component deliverables, a process calleddecomposition. While decomposing a project it’s important to: allow no gaps and allow no overlaps. Making as clear as possible the parts and subparts of a project decreases the chance of overlookingsomething significant, which will help to develop more accurate estimates of the time and resources needed to do the project.
Using action verbs when framing the titles of the activities that comprisea work package to clarify the nature of the work they entail helps in a significant way. Action verbs can improve the time and resource estimates because they provide a clear picture of what anactivity requires.
It’s important to remember that a plan isn’t a guarantee of the future; it’s the statement of what someone will work to achieve. If something not accorded to the plan happens inbetween the process, it’s necessary to revise it accordingly. Having in mind that unanticipated events can occur helps majorly in the process of getting a project done.
There are several schemes fororganizing a work breakdown structure such as: product components, functions, project phases, geographical areas and organizational units. Always have in mind that, when choosing a scheme to organizethe subelements of a work breakdown components, continue to use that same scheme to define all subelements under that work breakdown structure component to prevent possible overlap in categories. There are different ways to display a WBS; the following are the most common ones: the organization-chart format, the indented-outline format and the bubble-chart format.
