Treatment Protocols
Condition: Milk Fever
Signs/Symptoms: Cow down or wobbly/weak
No fever, usually low temp
Cold ears, tail, skin
Usually second lactation and older cows
Usually fresh less than 3 days
Treatment: If down give 2 bottles of 23% Calcium Gluconate IVslowly. (If labored, rapid breathing or cow appears distressed give second bottle of 23% Ca under the skin.)
If standing give 1 bottle of 23% Calcium Gluconate IV slowly.
Notes: Always check udder for mastitis if down to rule out toxic, watery mastitis.
If still down 4-6 hours after initial treatment reassess diagnosis. Rule out mastitis, injury, lowphosphorus, other illness. Pull blood sample to check calcium, phosphorus, magnesium levels.
Re-administer treatment if indicated or contact veterinarian.
If down for 12 hours treat as downer and follow down cow protocol.

Treatment Protocols
Condition: Retained Placenta
Signs/Symptoms: Placenta still present 12 hours after calving.
Treatment: If older cow, examine for signs of milk fever and treat with 23% CalciumGluconate following the milk fever treatment protocol.
Oxytocin 2 mls at each milking for 2-3 days
Monitor temperature. If temperature >103.0 Start on antibiotics:
Excenel- 2 mls per 100 lbs IM (25-30 mls) once a day for 3-4 days.
If temperature persists >103.0, off feed and not improving on Excenel switch antibiotics:
Polyflex- 2 mlsper 100 1bs IM (25-30 mls) once a day for 4 days.
Flunixin (Banamine) 20 mls IV once a day for 2 days.
Supportive treatment: Pump stomach as needed with YMCP and alfalfa meal if dehydrated, slow eating, and not improving.
Manual removal:
-not recommended in cows fresh less than 5 days
-if fresh greater than 5 days, eating andappear normal leave placenta alone.
-if fresh greater than 5 days and appear sick only manually remove placenta if it comes easily.
Give Lutalyse- 5 mls at 14 days in milk.
Notes: Cows with retained placenta are high risk for metritis. If they do pass their placenta they need to be monitored for signs of metritis.

Condition: Metritis
Signs/Symptoms:Abnormal vaginal discharge- foul smelling
Fever, slow eating, not milking well
History of difficult calving or retained placenta
Less than 3 weeks fresh
Treatment: Monitor temperature and appearance.
If temperature >103.0 and/or appears sick and off feed. Start on antibiotics:
Excenel- 2 mls per 100 lbs IM (25-30 mls) once a day for 4-5 days.If temperature persists >103.0, off feed and not improving on Excenel switch antibiotics:
Polyflex- 2 mls per 100 1bs IM (25-30 mls) once a day for 4 days.
