Life is all about mistakes and learning of them. The Scarlet Letter is an entire novel about mistakes that we make as Puritan. Sometimes some of us feel that passion is stronger than God’s laws.Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of this extravagant novel describe how our punishments and laws function in our general life; and in this specific novel, how punishments act in the life of that sinful andhypocrite woman, called Hester. Puritan punishments should remain the same because if the punishment is harsh, there will be fewer crimes, and people deserve to pay for what they did, even thoughthe laws affect people’s lives.
We are afraid of punishments; therefore we will try to not committee any crime against God’s laws, because he is the supreme Lord. More harsh punishments, less peopledoing crimes. Crimes that we do, “could put [us] to death… Even small crimes could make [us] an outcast for [our] entire life” (Hawthorne, 29). Death is one of the most dreadful punishments, so we willfear to make something wrong. God wants pure people, and also that if we committed any crime, we should learn of it. Therefore harsh punishments are the best for our town and for our God.
If anyonecommittee any kind of crime, they should pay for it. If we decide to go against the Bible and do whatever we want to do, we must pay with a terrify punishment. Like if we committed adultery “The Bibleand the law say that…should be punished by death” (Hawthorne, 30). God does not want irresponsible people, and we have to punish them for him. Adultery has to be pay with death. Punishments are forpeople who deserve it. Adultery, fight in public, cheating, be drunk in public, or have sex before marriage should be pay with a punishment that we will never forget in our entire life as sinful people.Others might argue that the punishments are cruel and severe. However, God says that we should pay regardless the level of the punishment. All the punishments are cruel, but it does not matter...
