The secret life of bees is one of the mostsuccessful drama novels of the last decade. It is set in 1964 in South Carolina, a place and time of strong racial divides and violence.
The plot is gripping. Lily Owens is a girl who has shaped herlife around one devastating memory: her mum was killed when she was four. Her father, a harsh and violent man has convinced her that the day when her mother came back, it was only to look for her thingsand not for her. Lily does not want to believe that. Lily’s only real companion is Rosaleen, a tender, but fierce-hearted black woman who cooks, cleans and acts as her mother. It is with her , thatLily decides to escape in order to find the truth about her mother’s life. They are taken in by three black bee-keeping sisters, May, June and August who Lily suppose know something about her mother.During their stay they live a lot of pleasant experiences but unfortunately, they also have to transit some painful ones on the way to find the secret about Lily’s mother.
The character of Lily, asthe book develops, has to face several misfortunes. The first one is the death of her mother at her early age of four and from then on the violent and authoritarian attitude that her father has towardsher since that moment. It could be said that the character of Lily develops in a very strong and mature way when going through this misfortunes. Instead of falling apart, she decides to find the truthby beginning a journey which implies dangerous risks for a girl of her age. This not only shows how mature she is but also her amazing courage.
