Rubin Carter
An example of overcoming racism
This is a summary of the life and case of Rubin Carter. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (born May 6, 1937) fought professionally as a middleweight boxer from 1961 to 1966. In 1966, he was arrested for a triple homicide in the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. He and another man, John Artis, were tried and convicted twice (1967 and 1976) forthe murders, but after the second conviction was overturned in 1985, prosecutors chose not to try the case for a third time. From 1993 to 2005 Carter served as executive director of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted.
Now we will see in detail each of the component parts of the subject at hand.
1) A difficult past:
First we need to know that the ancient american society,(50´s & 60´s) is a very unfair society. In this society, black people are underestimated by the white people, who thought that they were better than this skin colour.
We can consider to Rubin Carter like a good example of this injustice. When he was young he had some problems with justice. He was prosecuted in a reformatory because of he defended a friend with a white gun. Later, in 1954 for beexactly, he escaped from the reformatory and he joined in the army. When he finished his military service, he returned to New Jersey to become a Pro Boxer.
Carter was an adult now, and a month later, he was arrested for his escape.
He was arrested nine months. When Rubin went out he returned to the bad life, and other time was arrested for steal. And he was prosecuted.
But the most importantcase of Rubin Carter is the case of Lafayette Bar and Grill, where Carter with a friend, John Artis, was sued for a triple homicide. They were arrested but they didn't do.
2) The unfair trial:
In first place i will relate the facts and then Ivan will talk about the case. The June 17, 1966, Rubin Carter was drinking at a bar to relax, when John Artis, black also a fan recognizes him and lateroffered to take him home, approximately 2:30 am. Already underway, a patrol stops them without questioning, are forced to accompany the police. Later they learn that they are suspected of a triple murder in a nearby bar, the Lafayette Bar & Grill in Paterson. The bar owner and a customer die, and after a month, a woman died also badly injured (Hazel Tanis). Third customers, Willie Marins, survived the attack despite a gunshot to the head and lose the sight in one eye.
Alfred Bello, who had been near the Lafayette to commit a robbery in a factory at night, was a witness to what happened. Bello said later that he was coming to Lafayette when two black men, one carrying a shotgun, the other a gun, turned the corner walking towards him, and got into a white car that was parked nearLafayette. Bello was one of the first people on the scene, as Patricia Graham (later Patricia Valentine), who lives on the second floor, on the Lafayette Bar and Grill. Graham told police they saw two black men getting into a white car and drive west. Another neighbour, Ronald Ruggiero, heard the shots and said that when he looked from his window he saw Alfred Bello westbound on Lafayette Street to 16thStreet. He then heard the screech of tires and saw a car white past, heading west, with two black men in the front seat. Carter and John Artis were arrested on the night of the murder because they fit the description of witnesses to the murder. They were two black men in a white car similar to that described by witnesses.
Now we will talk about the case. Four months after that Carter and Artiswere arrested. The prosecution had two witnesses; Bello disclosed to the police that he had an accomplice in the attempted robbery, Arthur Dexter Bradley. On further questioning, Bello and Bradley identified Carter as one of the two men who had been carrying arms the night of the murders, Bello also identified Artis as another. Based on this additional evidence, Carter and Artis were arrested...
