How do scary movies make you feel scared? What’s in them?

What makes them scary?
1. Elements of the extreme
* In films, a murderous culprit could readily be identified. But the extremenature of the violence is what keeps viewers' eyes glued to the screen. While murder is an everyday occurrence in society, seeing someone getting split in two with an axe is much more disturbingthan hearing about a stranger who has been killed in a random shooting.
2. The soundtrack
* Is often easy to predict when the frightening parts are about to take place, based on theforeboding tunes played immediately beforehand. But placing the music right before the scary part, ending it suddenly provides the audience a false sense of relief, and then resuming immediately, just asthe next shock appears on screen
3. The unexplained
* It is no secret that people are most afraid of what they don't know or understand. Consider the fact that while most people are notafraid of death, they are deathly afraid of the manner in which they will die. In essence, it is the unknown, the unexplained phenomena in life that causes a huge sense of discomfort.

Those ideas and thoughts that are just so scary that we can't contemplate them becoming real - and ask the question "What if?"

What if?

The human imaginationwill always be able to outdo any special effects and it is the suggestion of something terrifying that really scares. Seeing the monster in a film actually makes it a whole lot less scary that ashadow moving across that little gap beneath the door or a creak on the stairs. Deep down, we all know that monsters don't really exist – it takes a big suspension of belief to really feel scared by ahorror film. The fear of something terrifying happening to normal people in a normal setting is far scarier than something that attempts to shock the audience with liters of blood and guts.
