TIME EXPRESSIONS
9th grade
IN TIME/ON TIME
"On time" - there is an expected time. We are meeting friends for dinner at 7. I hope we will be on time and we don't make them wait for us.

"In time"- there is a deadline. If we are past this deadline, we will miss the chance to do something. The show starts at 8 p.m. and no one is admitted after the show starts. I hope we will make it to thetheater in time.
On time = at the planned time; neither late nor early:
Peter wants the meeting to start exactly on time.
In time = with enough time to spare; before the last moment:He would have died if they hadn’t got him to the hospital in time."


SPEND TIME/WASTE TIME
'Waste' implies you have thrown time away. You have not used it effectively.
'Spend' on the othertime means that you have invested the time in something, and you most likely expect positive results.
eg. 'This relationship is a waste of time'.
eg. 'If you had spent more time with your son, hewould have been more successful.'

LATER/AFTER

"He will be here after" is spoken in the case of someone arriving after an event.
"Is Tom going to make it to dinner?" "No, but he will be hereafter. He hopes to make it in time for dessert."

"He will be here in two hours." If he's arriving two hours after her, then "He will be here two hours after (that/her)" "He will be arriving two hoursafter (her/that)."

"See you later" used always to mean that you had made an arrangement to meet later on the same day, and
"See you afterwards" was only said when you were going to meet up againfollowing some event, e.g. in the bar after the performance.

AGO/BEFORE
Ago is used when talking about past times from the present moment.
E.g. I’m late for the meeting it started about 10minutes ago.
A few weeks ago I broke my leg, but it´s starting to get better now.

Before is used when talking about past times from time which is not the present moment.
